Les « indésirables » à Rochefort durant la guerre 1914-1918

L’internement des civils étrangers « indésirables » révèle toute une face cachée de la totalisation du conflit. La caserne Martou fut un des principaux « camps de concentration » français durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Plus de 700 hommes mobilisables austro-allemands y furent internés ; les derniers ne furent libérés qu’en novembre 1919.

The confinement of “unwanted” alien civilians is one of the seamy sides of this global war. The Martrou barracks was used as one of the main “concentration camps” throughout the conflict. More than 700 Austro-German citizens likely to join the army were kept in custody there; some of them even had to wait until November 1919 before they got liberated!
